Opening Reception: Saturday, May 17, 5 - 7 pm.
Painting immerses me in the outdoors and quiets my mind. If all goes well there is a time of painting without thinking when the brush takes over. These recent paintings are focused on local California landscapes, often started en plein air and finished in the studio. I work on location and out of my studios in Berkeley and Volcano, California.
In these works, I invite viewers to step beyond the edge of the canvas and wander into a forest where light, color, and form conspire to evoke memory and presence. Rather than depicting a specific grove or landscape, I paint the feeling of being surrounded by trunks and branches—the towering verticals that both anchor and pierce the sky, the liminal spaces where foliage becomes a veil of shifting greens
and golds.
Ultimately, In the Company of Trees is an invitation to pause. These paintings do not offer a tidy narrative or a fixed vista, but a space in which to listen. They awaken the whisper of needles in the breeze, the quiet dialogue between earth and light, and the deeper echoes of recollection. In sharing these fragments of forest, I hope to foster in others the sense of awe and solace I find whenever I lose myself among the trees.
