Hand-Colored Photographs
August 9 - September 17, 2022

Hand coloring photographs is as old as photography itself. Because early photographs could only be printed in black and white, the only way to transform them into color images was to add color by hand. Many miniature portrait artists were the first to add color to these old black and white photographs.

By hand coloring her photographs, Lisa feels she is honoring and carrying on an old tradition along with applying her own version of color to the images. This selection of her photographs reaches back to her darkroom days of hand coloring darkroom prints (which are known as "silver gelatin" prints) and extends to the present with her hand colored digital images.

The silver gelatin photographs of old ghost towns were colored using transparent photo oils. The recent digital images were taken nearby her home where she walks her dog everyday.
